NMCEL, holds an annual Summer Conference, which allows members to attend various clinics as well as to exchange ideas with peers from throughout the state. Several one-day and two-day seminars and workshops are held each year focusing on specific topics. For information on workshops and conferences see conference and events on the NMCEL website.
NMSSA staff in cooperation with the Executive Director represent the interests of local school boards and superintendents in the legislature. We participate in the lawmaking process through the monitoring of bills, providing testimony at hearings and as a source of information for legislators, legislative committees, the Public Education Department and other agencies.
The Executive Council (Governing Body of NMSSA) is made up of 17 members: They are the four officers of NMSSA, representatives from the eight regions of the state, two rural school representatives (one from the North and one from the South) and two at large districts; Albuquerque Public Schools and Las Cruces Public Schools. The council meets periodically through the year with the Executive Director, Stan Rounds, to discuss topics of importance to the organization and the districts. These questions and/or topics are then submitted to the Secretary of Education for clarification and further information.
Stan Rounds facilitates our program to mentor and serve newly appointed superintendents with NSI (New Superintendent Institute). Additionally we have successfully implemented an Aspiring Superintendents Academy to identify, encourage and prepare administrators for the most challenging and important leadership role.
